Day 11: Anna, Ida, Sarahmee and Elisapee

We met the girls (Anna, Ida, Sarahmee, Elisapee) coming down to Minnesota for lunch a few days ago and since then we've had a couple chances to get to know them better. They are all amazingly sweet and we can't wait for them to come down.

Here's Anna:

Here's Ida!

Here's Sarahmee!<

Here's Elisapee!
Our hamburger lunch was quite tasty and was a good ice breaker for all of us. Even though Joe and Jeff are far beyond shy, the girls were a bit quiet at first. But they warmed up to us after a while (the boys' charms must have kicked in) and before they left we were all chit-chatting away and taking pictures. We talked about each of our schools, what we like to do for fun and why the girls want to come to Minnesota. Jokingly (well, maybe) Sarahmee has continously said she wants to go to the mall. Anna and Elisapee said they thought it would be interesting to be in a place that is so big and so much warmer than Clyde River. But Ida's quiet exclamation of "trees!" was quite appreciated. So the girls have a lot to look forward to. Here's us right before the bell rang for afternoon classes.

Last night at the community feast we met up again. Anna and her family helped me get in line and told me some history about how their ancestors used to catch char and hunt caribou. After dinner, Anna and some of her friends invited the boys and I out to go snow mobiling with them. We stopped at a big hill and had a few wrestling matches and quite a few games of tag. It was a lot of fun!!

I met up with Ida, Sarahmee and Elisapee this morning at the Global Warming 101 send-off. We stood off to the side talking and sharing stories. I have to admit it was great to finally have some female peers to talk with! They even offered to teach me how to throat sing. They taught me a few sounds (you try to make that deep guttural sound when you say boo! to scare someone) but I'm still an extreme novice. Then again I have until Saturday, so I'll keep trying!

Thoughts from the boy perspective:

The girls are cool and are excited to come to Minnesota. So other then that, we will be eating some country food tonight and we will talk to you later!

I think the Minnesota Mamas are going to have to have a cheek pull to see who gets to host the girls! I want to teach Ida how to hug trees! If I thought this adventure couldn't get any more exciting, now I am giddy over the girls visiting. Thank you for introducing them to us!

I have a question about names: what is the significance of "mee" or "pee" at the end of a given name? It reminds me of the Irish tradition of adding "een" to a name (like Pegeen) to show affection. Or is it a nickname like "Alli"? Or Zoinky :-)

And tell us about the preparation of country food! What foods are the girls curious to try down "south"? We should take them to Chang Mai Thai! Also, the Minnesota Mammas could do a community hot dish night at SES! They might even be game for lutefisk!

And I also want to know if there are midwives and how birth is viewed. Has modern technology or medicine changed traditional birthing methods? What role do women play in their culture? It seems with girls headed our way in September that females are viewed as leaders or ambassadors.

Hi SES team! We are all very proud of your work and cultural connections....we keep following your adventures via the web. How have the interviews been going? Has the technology worked as planned? Has Jeff kept up with his journeling? Looking forward to more stories and a new connection for SES. Hage

Now I dont know exactly when they'll be visiting MN, but I hope the MN trail at the zoo is open by then, it's really such an awsome visit. I hope you'll all plan to take them into the cities, to visit the capital building and the cathedral, Minneapolis to visit our dome and the cathedral and the UofM. They'll love to see the big city im sure! It's funny to think that even if they visit in the winter, It'll still probably feel warm to them! (especially since I live in Mexico and am not really used to the winters anymore!) I hope you guys will all be able to visit from college when they come if it's not during the summer. Dalen, with your contacts that you have with the Native Americans, your mentors (im sorry to sound silly but I cant remember which tribe) I bet it would be wonderful for them to have a chance to meet them and perhaps they can see some native dancing and traditional costumes. I bet there are more similarities there than we'd expect. Of course they'll love to see the mall. It will be SO different for them. As much as we may hate to admit it, consumerism is a huge part of the way we live, and it'll be a fun outing no matter how you look at it. So, did anyone comment on the Whale blubber? Any dried version of that avialable? I ask 'cuz it sounds from the blogs like Stacie is DYING to try it, dont you think Dalen and Joe? Take care guys, un abrazo.

They can stay in my room! They might as well, since I'm not using it.

I'm taking an environmental issues class up here at UND (I like to refer to it as my SES 101 class...) and today we were talking about global warming of all things. I was telling my professor about what you guys are doing up there, and he was pretty impressed.

I really can't wait to see the pictures and hear the real stories.

Hey "Dilan" Geggy here. I just remebered you have a blog on here to, SO I have alot of reading to catch up on. I still don't know why you didn't invite me. I feel hurt. Anyway I might have been mistaken for a Narwahl (right?) Maybe just as well. A once in a lifetime experience you got there. Enjoy and live it up. And stay warm.
